BROOKDALE ‘A’ have had to put the champagne on ice after losing 6-2 in their penultimate Oldham Golf League ‘A’ Division match at Ashton.

The best they could do were two halves from Pete Buckley and Gary Lever and Russ Wood’s point to leave them needing to win their final game at Werneth tonight to be guaranteed the title.

However, they are still firm favourites as the two teams chasing them, Denton and Dukinfield, who both have a game in hand, meet tomorrow and a decisive win for either is required to prolong affairs.

Denton stayed in touch with a 7-1 home win over Saddleworth while Dukinfield got a hard-fought 5-3 away at Stamford.

Oldham are heading for their best league position for many years and leap-frogged Werneth in to fourth place with a 7-1 home success.

Captain Paul Pattinson and Norman Radcliffe (3 & 2), Lee Blainey and Lee Melia (2 & 1) and Paul Rainford and Barry Lewis (1 up) got the wins while Steve Daubney and Phil Doherty halved with Duncan Hough and Joe Cassidy.

There’s still a real chance of a Brookdale double as their ‘B’ team made a decisive move in their bid to claim the ‘B’ division title.

While they were winning 8-0 at home to Ashton, table-topping Denton were losing 5-3 at Saddleworth.

Brookdale’s winners were Paul Fry and Dave Harrison, Chris Gleave and Gary McHue, Gary and Graham Whitaker and Mike Arnside and Keith Loftus.

Saddleworth’s victors on the night were John Walsh and Steve Taylor (3 & 2) Frank Pullen and Brian Rooney (1up from being one down with two to play) and a half for Jordan Taylor and Graham Hobbs.

Werneth ‘B’ were celebrating after they broke their duck for the season — at the 11th attempt.

They beat Oldham 5-3 — all the more sweeter for Werneth captain Ron Lewis as his opposite number at Oldham is son Martin. Werneth’s winners were pairings Tom Dwayre and Ken Baker, Phil Walker and Peter Cameron, Ian Hartley and Tony McNamara.
