Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon has backed the return of the Chronicle, believing the public of Oldham will be hungry to re-connect with the new, modern way of catching up with the news.

Mr McMahon dropped into the Chronicle’s new base on Henshaw Street to offer his support on launch day, and revealed that he hopes Oldhamers based across the globe will do likewise as everyone heads towards a new digital age of receiving their news.

Mr McMahon said: “The Chronicle is re-establishing itself and getting out there in a more modern way, and I think people will really welcome that.

“Just think about what the media is there for. It’s there to keep people informed and to share information, but it’s also there to hold to people to account, and to be a voice for its community.

“What we’re seeing incrementally with the demise of local and regional newspapers is that national newspapers just haven’t got the time to cover the communities that are spread around the UK.

“That disconnect is very real.

“Hopefully, though, with the re-establishment of the Chronicle, it can absolutely be part of the community. It can also have that really important role in our democracy.”

There are former townsfolk now spread out across the continents, and the new Chronicle website will serve the public with informative, breaking news and sport, wherever they may live.

“Just think about that ex-pat community around the world,” added Mr McMahon.

“They have a yearning to find out what’s going on in their home town, the place where they were born.

“There’s people in Australia, America, right around the world, who can now go on the Chronicle website and find out what’s going on.

“There’s been a gap there, so I think people will be really excited to see it back.”
