Come on mums and daughters, sign up for the Oldham 5k 'Race for Life'

Date published: 06 March 2018

This Mother's Day, Oldham mums and daughters are being urged to join the fight against cancer by entering Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

The charity is inviting women of all ages, shapes and sizes to pledge to take part on Sunday, June 24, at Alexandra Park, Oldham.

There’s no better time for mums and daughters across Oldham to sign up for the 5k run right now at www.raceforlife.org

Taking part in Race for Life is a hugely moving experience as people come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived or support those going through treatment.

Many women will be taking part in Race for Life with their mums, while others will be participating to honour their memory.

Kirsti Thompson, Cancer Research UK’s Oldham Event Manager, said: “We are urging mums and daughters in Oldham to make this Mother’s Day extra special by signing up to Race for Life.

“By signing up to Race for Life, women in Oldham can make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives.

“Taking part in Race for Life is a special and unique experience - full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter. By joining like-minded ladies committed to the cause, women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way. Whether they plan to pound the pavements or amble to the finish line, every step participants take will help to support crucial research.”

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before.

Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding crucial research.

One Oldham woman who took part last year is Dawn Nisbet, of Garden Suburb, who has inspired many after sharing a sweaty but jubilant snap taken in Alexandra Park last year after completing Park Run.

Dawn first got into running after signing up to do Race for Life back in 2016.

She said: “It’s a case of believing that you can do it, breaking it down into smaller steps and finding something you love.

"It’s great to hear that Race for Life will be in Oldham this summer and I’d encourage women to sign up. Race for Life is a really friendly and supportive event with joggers, walkers and runners.

"Participants encourage each other all the way round and it really spurs you on knowing that you are also doing something to help raise funds for Cancer Research UK and bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”

Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support.

Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to spend over £28 million last year in the North West on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research - helping more men, women and children survive the disease.

Kirsti added: “Every day, 120 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West.

"That’s why we’re calling on ladies in Oldham to sign up right now and join women from every walk of life at the start line this summer.

“Money raised through Race for Life is helping to drive research to help beat over 200 different types of cancer - that’s why every step, every person and every penny raised counts.”
