Clarksfield street evacuated after bomb disposal team arrived

Bomb disposal experts were called to an Oldham street amid rumours of a suspicious package.

According to residents in Hillside Avenue, Clarksfield, officers arrived shortly before mid-day following reports of a suspicious package.

A Greater Manchester Police statement confirmed: "At around 11:20am on Thursday, March 29, police were called to Hillside Avenue in Oldham to reports that a suspicious device had been found.

"As a precautionary measure, some nearby properties have been evacuated while bomb disposal experts carry out an assessment.

"A scene remains in place."

The scene is thought to be at an unoccupied house backing onto Clarksfield Primary School. The school is empty with staff and pupils on holiday for Easter.

Residents in the area of Hillside Avenue have been evacuated onto Clarksfield Road as a precaution, and a cordon has been set up at the top and bottom of Hillside Avenue, closing the road in both directions.

The bomb disposal team departed the scene at approximately 3.30pm, and were reportedly seen soon after at Waterhead Park.

Street cordons have been lifted.
