The Yanks are back!

It's almost time to spend another memorable weekend in the 1940s as the north's longest-running World War Two military and living history event returns to Uppermill.

On Saturday and Sunday week, August 11 and 12, Saddleworth will be transformed into Yanks Weekend, a vision of wartime Britain in an extravaganza involving everything from military vehicle parades to period dance.

For those military history enthusiastiasts, the vehicle encampment at Saddleworth school, battlefield re-enactments and militaria stalls are not to be missed.

Overhead will be the opportunity to witness the Spitfire, Lancaster and Hurricane in an RAF Battle of Britain memorial flight.

These spectacular displays of wartime engineering will take place at 1pm on Saturday and 3:20pm on Sunday.

Normandy and RBL veterans will also be joining the Mayor of Oldham in a coffee morning at Betty's chippy.

For a taste of life back on the homefront, a celebration of all things 1940s is set to make the event a truly immersive experience.

A 40s bring and buy sale, period dance performance, funfair and American classic car display can be enjoyed alongside the licensed bar and themed pubs.

The vintage fashion show is perfect for the theme, presenting pieces from Esme's Vintage Closet and Pyewacket Millinery as they prepare for their Hollywood vs Utility range.

The event itself is named after 1979 film 'Yanks', a drama depricting the relationships between US soldiers stationed in semi-rural England and locals during the build-up to Operation Overlord in 1944.

Filmed in the area, the story celebrates the cultural differences between the loud Yanks and reserved Brits.

Admission for both days is £5 for adults and £3 for under 16s, with a family ticket at £12.

Judging by previous years, the weekend will be well worth donning your favourite vintage frock or uniform to remember and celebrate society on the homefront.
