Latics fined £5,000 and warned following Chesterfield pitch invasion

Latics have been fined £5,000 and warned by the Football Association following a pitch invasion incident during the National League fixture at Chesterfield on August 19 this year.

After James Norwood netted a late Latics equaliser to dramatically rescue a point for Latics as they drew 1-1 at the SMH Group Stadium, a pitch invasion followed, which was subsequently condemned by the visiting club.

Today (Wednesday) a Latics club statement read: "Oldham Athletic has been fined £5,000 and received a warning following the National League fixture against Chesterfield in August.

"The sanctions follow the ruling of an FA Commission in relation to the conduct of supporters in the aftermath of the equalising goal.

"The club is involved in ongoing work with Greater Manchester Police and Derbyshire Police regarding matters that arose from the encroachment of supporters onto the pitch.

"The club has listened to advice received from the FA in relation to our procedures as a visiting club for fixtures of this nature.

"It is important we use this opportunity to remind supporters that entering the field of play, as well as the use of flares and pyrotechnics, are criminal offences and carry severe consequences.

"Oldham supporters always travel in their numbers away from home and, as a club, we are very grateful to have such a large and passionate following.

"However, instances such as this mean we risk our supporters and the club being damaged reputationally and financially.

"We cannot stress enough the importance of remaining in the stands at all times during every fixture and backing the team in the right way, as the vast majority of supporters currently do.

"The club remains committed to the FA’s stance of tackling anti-social and criminal behaviour at all matches."
