Mayor on hand to salute graphic design students' care network logo competition

Date published: 20 January 2024

Community working between graphic design students at Oldham College and the Oldham Central Primary Care Network (PCN) culminated with an exciting competition to come up with a new website logo.

Oldham Central Primary Care Network consists of 11 GP Practices covering the Alexandra, Coldhurst and St Mary’s wards.

To help meet the health needs of the local residents, they work together with community services, mental health, social care, pharmacy, and voluntary services in the local area - building on existing primary care services and enabling greater provision of proactive, personalised, coordinated and more integrated health and social care for people close to home.

Because the aim is to ensure all work is collaborative, the PCN approached Oldham College to see if the students could design a logo which would be displayed on the PCN website, stationary and other platforms where we promote the work of the PCN.

Neil Smith, Business Manager, Oldham Central PCN and Karen Greenwood, Project Officer for Oldham PCN met with Callum Mellor, Programme Tutor of Graphic Design, back in the Summer of 2023 and provided a brief for the students to work to.

It was run as a competition and the winner would receive a digital graphics drawing tablet to support them with their future college work.

Students from years 1,2 and 3 worked on the designs and the work counted towards their end of year exams and was added to their portfolio.

Following deliberation by the PCN, a design by Aeryn was chosen as thr winner.

Aeryn is a first year graphic design student who had recently completed her Level 2 access course last year.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Dr Zahid Chauhan OBE, kindly agreed to present the prize to Aeryn at the college.
