Ben's pork chilli and leek sausage - the Welsh Dragon - is Oldham's best!

Date published: 26 March 2024

Oldham RUFC's popular annual Sausage of the Year competition was won by Lee Brook and his son Sam, from Farmers Choice Butchers on Beal Lane in Shaw.

Paul H Walsh, a past President of Oldham Rugby Union, presented the annual “Paul Peacock” Sausage of the Year trophy to Lee and his son Ben, who made the winning “Welsh Dragon” pork chilli and leek sausage.

The sausage competition is an annual event coinciding with the former players and members reunion.

It is primarily for North East Manchester butchers to enter, who generously donate their wares in the hope of becoming champion sausage maker.

This year, Farmers Choice held off competition from Newhey Butchers and Sandwich Shop, Cinderhill Farm and Butchers Block, who have won the past two competitions.

Past winners of the competition, which started in 2015, include Bobby’s Bangers, Farmers Choice, Bill Harrison, Ainsworths Butchers and Butchers Block.

Paul Peacock was a former player at ORUFC.

Following his early death in 2018 the competition was named in his honour.

Paul wrote over 20 books around food (Guide to Poultry Farming in the City, Cheese Making, Precycling, Seasonal Cookbook, Smoking and Curing among others), but most notably ‘The Sausage Book’, which is why, as a former player, this trophy is named after him.

The competition is annually organised by Steve 'Toby' Tyrrell, Chairman of the ORUFC Youth Academy.
