A reminder of what Christmas is all about

Halle Orchestra Bridgewater Hall, Manchester WELL over 250 voices joined with more than 70 musicians in a fabulous festive foray which explored not only well-loved Christmas carols, but some less well-known connections to the festive season.

We all got the chance to belt out old favourites such as “The First Noel” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” which gave the audience a taste of what it is like to be teased into action by Bury-born Stephen Bell.

The fresh-faced conductor has such obvious delight in the task facing him, it is impossible not be drawn in by his infectious enthusiasm and his easy, relaxed manner as he chats away to his audience about the music about to be played.

The imposing organ, which dominates the huge wall behind the stage, came into its own during the carol concert and the magnificent Halle Orchestra was faultless and a delight to hear. Handel’s tremendous “Music for the Royal Fireworks” opened the second half with a flourish, followed by the delightful “Sussex Carol” with members of the orchestra and of the Halle’s four vocal ensembles — the Halle Choir, the children’s choir, the youth choir, and the youth training choir — all wearing hats and antlers, lights and tinsel.

The concert provided a welcome oasis of calm, a world away from the frantic preparations for Christmas which were going on outside the Bridgewater Hall.

A lovely festive celebration, and a reminder of what Christmas is all about.
