Matthew Walls celebrates golden glory in Glasgow
Cycling
Former Crompton House school pupil Matthew Walls won a brilliant gold medal in the men's elimination race on the track at the European Championships in Glasgow.
Walls, aged 20, beat Portugal's Rui Oliveira in the final sprint to win Britain's fourth gold medal in track cycling.
Walls, who has been making his senior major championship debut, said: "I was strong enough to lead from the front and that is what I did.
"It is a great competition and I'm just glad I got selected for it.
"It's been a fantastic week."
Walls has long been tipped to achieve glory at senior championship level.
Success at the Junior European Track Championships in 2016 was quickly followed by more notable achievements at the Junior Worlds.
Walls has seen his reputation grow in recent years, and he will be hoping to carry on Great Britain's rich tradition on two wheels.
