A tough day at the office for Oldham RU

Date published: 23 February 2024

It was a tough day at the office for Oldham RUFC when they were thumped 43-0 at home by traditional rivals Tyldesley.

Apart from two short periods, one in each half, Tyldesley dominated the game with a six-try display which was enhanced by a three-try performance by young centre Daniel Berrisford whose anticipation, acceleration and pace posed a constant threat.

The other three tries were scored by forwards, all in the last minutes of the halves and all from close range - one from a penalty, one from a ruck and one from a scrum - as Oldham’s defensive efforts had taken their toll on the home side's energy levels.

Oldham worked hard and man on man defence was generally good as they matched the bigger opposition pack in the scrums and rucks but, in attack, they lacked structure and cohesion - an inevitable consequence of the huge number of personnel changes.

Captain Jack Taylor, full back Phil Conroy, half-backs Jordan McEwan and Tom Davies worked particularly hard in covering the field as the Oldham line was regularly peppered by a series of well-placed kicks .

Colts Sean Carter, Tom Ferriday and Corey Kelly all enhanced their growing reputations and action-man "Moose” Brennan was Oldham’s best go-forward pack member until he had to retire with a nasty head injury.

However, MOM was given to Paul Wardle who has stepped up to the mark over the last few games and has been a pillar of strength in the scrums.

Oldham remain in the relegation zone and must hope that all squad members make a great effort to get to training and make themselves available for selection for the remaining league fixtures - the first against league leaders Trafford MV.
