Michelle's marathon challenge in memory of her mum

Date published: 26 March 2018

In the 1980s, Michelle Tomlin’s mother was treated at The Christie before she passed away.

This year, Michelle will be the same age as her mum was when she died, and she will be running the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon in her memory.

In 2016, Oldhamer Michelle was contacted by her aunt, who told her she had ovarian cancer.

Michelle underwent genetic testing, and has found out she is a carrier of the BRCA mutation, which heightens risk of cancer.

Despite this, Michelle has taken positives from the last year and a half – she is now in contact with her mum’s family and has cousins she didn’t know before.

Next month, Michelle will run the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon to raise money for The Christie in memory of her mum.

She said: “The Christie charity has helped me and my family throughout difficult times, so I was very pleased to be chosen as one of their runners this year.

"Staying local to Trafford I normally go out and support the runners, so I am very excited to actually be taking part this year.”

The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon is organised by Xtra Mile Events in partnership with Trafford Council.

Other event partners include Optimum Nutrition, Emirates Old Trafford, Erdinger Alkoholfrei, Official National Charities such as Cancer Research UK, Alzheimer’s Society, JustGiving, and local charities including The Christie’s & Royal Manchester.

The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 8.
