Stay cool at Primrose Bank

The community of Primrose Bank celebrated the launch of Oldham’s third Community Fridge waste reduction initiative.

Initiated by ifOldham – a social enterprise that aims to improve the wellbeing of people and their local environments through practical action – in partnership with the Primrose Centre and Great Places Housing Group, the Community Fridge project will redistribute food and other consumables that would otherwise be sent to landfill.

The items are intercepted from local supermarkets by ifOldham, and are then available for the local community to take as they wish. Residents can also contribute to the fridge themselves by donating food grown either at home or in the Primrose Centre’s communal garden.

Great Places’ Neighbourhood Co-ordinator, David Stewart, said: “I believe the Community Fridge will be an amazing asset for the area.

"Through my work within the Primrose Bank neighbourhood, I can see how locals have a real passion for food, whether that be growing their own fruit and vegetables, or attending cooking sessions at the Community Centre.

“Physical and mental health is one of our key priorities for the area, and this is just one of the many projects we have lined up as part of our ongoing commitment to improving the wellbeing of the community.

“The launch event was fantastic, and everyone was full of enthusiasm – I don’t doubt the project will be a huge success for Primrose Bank.”

The fridge will be open from Monday to Friday at Primrose Community Centre and will be run by volunteers.
