Marty reappears in glossy new World of Sport wrestling book

Date published: 20 August 2018

Oldham’s Marty Jones is among more than 50 stars profiled in a new book on the ‘World of Sport’ era of television wrestling.

“Have A Good Week… Till Next Week” includes detailed biographies on wrestlers including Jones, known for his groundbreaking rivalry with Mark Rocco.

Author John Lister said: “Jones and Rocco were a great example of how pro wrestling blurred the lines of reality.

"While they worked together to entertain an audience, their mutual drive to be the best performer meant they often clashed in the dressing room.

"In the ring they were years ahead of their time with their fast-paced, hard-hitting and athletic style.

"It was an honour to interview him for the book.”

Jones was trained by Billy Robinson, a former British amateur and professional champion.

As well as becoming a TV star in the UK, Jones travelled to Germany, Canada and Japan to wrestle, though his most memorable tour was of Mexico where he has his head shaved after a match.

A moment he’d prefer to have forgotten came in a ‘steel cage’ bout when he impaled his arm on a spike… and still finished the match.

After retiring, Jones ran the Angel pub in Royton.

He now runs the Squared Circle Wrestling Academy where he trains the international stars of tomorrow.
