A STREET cleaner who says he loves keeping his neighbourhood tidy come rain or shine has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award.

Owen Arthurs is a familiar sight on his round in Derker and also takes part in community clean-ups.

He was nominated by Barry Cassidy, managing director of Royton-based North West Business Services, who said: "He's out in all weather keeping the streets clean and tidy and has a fantastic work ethic. He's a real credit to the borough."

Owen (49) previously worked for First Choice Homes Oldham, George Hill and Remploy.

Proud of his nomination, he said: "I enjoy what I am doing - I just love it really. I really get something out of it as I live in Derker, so I try to keep it nice and tidy."

He doesn't even mind the bad weather, adding: "It might put some people off but not me. I have got my waterproofs and I just work through it. As long as I have got my little radio on and listening to music, I am OK.

Ian Monaghan, environmental manager street cleansing at Oldham Council, said: "Owen takes a great pride in his role serving the local community, this being more prominent as he is himself a local resident of the Derker area. As such he not only performs his day-to-day role but also supports local community clean-ups on his off days over a weekend.

"Owen has become a familiar face and as such his hard earned efforts have been noticed in this very much deserved nomination. I'm sure Owen will be thrilled and will continue to improve the lives of his residents and neighbours."
