SATURDAYS are a thing of the past for dedicated Jason Bromley.

The founder of Cycle Club Oldham, a non-profit community group, puts in the hard yards to ensure local people are getting on their bike.

He has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award in the sports administrator category.

Paul Burgess, who helps run the club, explained: “Jason hasn’t had a Saturday for the best part of five years!

“He wanted to do something to help people, especially after seeing so many children riding bikes without helmets.

“So he started the group and it gathered pace. It isn’t just for children, though, we get adults coming along to lose weight, or just for the social aspect.”

Burgess believes Bromley’s safety first message is starting to hit home with the younger members of the club.

“Jason is breaking down the barriers now,” he added.

“Children were always so reluctant to wear a helmet because it was not perceived to be cool among their friends, but the message is definitely getting across now, we have seen an improvement in attitude.”

When the weather is kind, the group welcomes around 40 people for a Saturday morning ride.

“Jason wanted to form a group that was accessible to everyone, and that is exactly what he did,” said Burgess.

“All he asks for in return is £1 — if people can afford it — which goes towards first aid, puncture kits and days out for the group.

“He is helped out by a fantastic fleet of volunteers, but it was Jason’s brainchild and he dedicates so much time to the cause, which makes a real difference.”
