A HARD-WORKING head teacher who works tirelessly to ensure her school provides an exemplary education to children in the community has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award.

Catharine Jones has endeavoured to ensure that Stoneleigh Academy had broad opportunities available offer for all its pupils both during school and outside the classroom.

Since her permanent appointment in December, last year, she has spearheaded the radical transformation of the Derker-based primary school.

Some stand-out projects include 40 pupils graduating from the “Children’s University”, donning caps and gowns after taking part in extra learning activities during playtimes.

Her hard work was also reflected in the the school’s most successful SATs results.

She said: “I am flattered to have been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

“We are passionate about serving the community of Derker through opening the school as a community base for adult learning, having an open-door policy for parents and creating links with students across Oldham through the wider Oldham College Academy family.”

With support from Oldham College, the school has also reached academy status.

College principal Alun Francis nominated her for the award.

He said: “Catharine sees Stoneleigh very much at the heart of the community and has endeavoured to provide learning not only for the pupils but for their parents too.”
