Teacher Rebecca hits the right notes

A DEDICATED music teacher and choir leader has earned herself a Pride in Oldham nomination after years of helping the youth of Oldham find their singing voice.

Rebecca Fox conducts two youth choirs at Oldham Music Centre — boys’ choir Vocal Recall and a junior choir for children as young as eight — and is currently working with both on a project which will see them take part in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rebecca, who has worked as a singing and music teacher for Oldham Music Service for eight years, said: “I am honoured and shocked to have been nominated for such a great award.

“That news certainly put a spring in my step at work.

“In terms of dedication to teaching music I feel that the entire team at Oldham Music Service should be nominated.

“Music making and singing in the Oldham community and schools is a privilege and all our staff work hard every day to pass on the joy that music brings.”

She was nominated after she inspired many young members of the junior choir to pursue singing and improve their confidence levels.

One mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “She is an inspiration to my two young sons and she always turns up with such enthusiasm.

Happier

“When they first started they were so nervous but Rebecca gave them the confidence to get on stage and sing.

“Now they are so much happier and that is down to her and I am sure more people would agree with how much she puts into these choirs.”

Rebecca also leads the Dr Kershaw’s Crooners, a choir for all patients, carers and staff at the Royton hospice.

The Crooners meet meet every Tuesday at the hospice and perform in public to help raise funds for Dr Kershaw’s.
