Homework-challenge parents are class act

PARENTS at two primary schools have risen to the challenge to get involved in their children’s learning.

Now their dedication and hard work has earned them a Pride in Oldham nomination.

Martine Buckley, executive head teacher at Yew Tree and Mather Street schools, put forward the parents for high standard of the “fantastic” homework challenges they do with the children.

Every few weeks pupils are given a task relating to the topic they are studying in school. This can be completed in any way they like and Mrs Buckley explained: “It’s not so much about getting parents involved in homework, more about getting them involved in learning as we know this links to attainment. An example would be a Year 1 project about buildings and structures when families together produced replicas of famous buildings around the world.

“Support from parents is recognised as having a tremendous value for the children’s educational progress, as well as being fun for the whole family.”

The results of the homework tasks are regularly shared in assemblies and displayed around the school and on-line.

“We are really proud of the work the children have completed at home and the support they have received from their families,” added Mrs Buckley.
