Tireless scout leader an inspiration

AN inspirational scout leader has been nominated for Pride in Oldham award after sparking the imagination of hundreds of children for over 20 years.

Julie McLoughlin is the leader of Watersheddding cub scouts and has worked relentlessly behind the scenes to ensure the enjoyment of all the children who attend the weekly meetings.

She has been in her current role for just over five years, having previously spent 15 years as leader of St Ambrose scouts.

Mrs McLoughlin was stunned by the news but was happy to discover that other people have recognised her commitment.

She said: “I’m shocked — for once I’m a bit speechless. It’s lovely to be nominated and to know that people appreciate what I have done.

“I’ve had a very good time and thoroughly enjoy working with the children, I find it very rewarding. This has really made my day.”

Mrs McLoughlin works at the group alongside her daughter, Rachel, and assistant scout leader Lee Thompson.

Lee said that working with Mrs McLoughlin had been inspirational.

He said: “What a lot of people don’t see is all the work she does behind the scenes, from the programme planning to creating new games and activities for all to enjoy.

“She has truly been an inspiration to me and everyone she has taught and known. She never asks for anything back so I think it’s about time for the community to give something back to her.”
