Oldham’s Pipes of peace

THE musical sensations and tireless work of Oldham Scottish Pipe Band have earned them a Pride in Oldham nomination.

With over 30 regular members, the band regularly plays at events throughout Oldham and beyond, including the Remembrance Sunday parade.

Most recently, the band paraded through Oldham honouring RAF veterans as part of the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of Britain but they also play in various private events, including weddings.

Graham Hougton, the band’s secretary and bass drummer, said: “We are delighted to have been nominated for the award. It is such an honour.

“We are just like a family and we just have fun and try to make the music fun for the people who come to watch. Sometimes we even work three events a day but we don’t mind because we just want to entertain.

“We all love Oldham and want to do our bit in the community, helping to raise as much money as we can for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice and other causes when we perform.

“But we’ve never expected any reward for what we do.”

The band was nominated by Patricia Knott, a member of the Royal Artillery, who has seen them perform on a number of occasions at various events in the town.

She said: “I thought that the band were in need of some recognition for all their hard work and dedication to Oldham.

“If it wasn’t for them working tirelessly and as volunteers, we wouldn’t have a band for Remembrance Sunday.

“They have gone totally unrecognised for years and this should change. They deserve a place in these awards as they are a credit to Oldham.”
