CARING workers at the Royal Oldham Hospital Shop are delighted after being told that they have been nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award.

Each member of staff has been praised for regularly going above and beyond for their customers.

They also often provide a friendly ear for anyone who wants to talk through their problems or who are worried about family in the hospital.

Karen Healey, one of the seven members of staff said: “It is great to be nominated and I cannot wait to tell everyone who works here.

“Because we are a shop in a hospital, we have to make sure that we keep everything in stock and keep spirits high for patients.

“People often come in and we have a chat about their problems or worries, and I think it makes a real difference for them.”

The shop received several nominations, with Karen Hamer, a member of staff at the hospital, saying: “I have seen how they go out of their way to assist the patients, many of who have disabilities, illness or are recovering from an operation, who need extra help.

“If anyone needs a chat, they are always happy to oblige.

“They are always polite, good humoured and they give everyone a great welcome when they walk into the hospital. I usually leave the shop with a smile on my face.”

Another nomination came from disabled resident Linda Thompson, who said: “They treat me, and everyone who comes into the shop, with respect.

“They really care about the community and people in the hospital and they are always very friendly. When I collapsed one day they ran over to help me as much as they could and made sure I was okay.

“They really deserve the award for everything they do.”
