Boxing coach is a big hit

CHILDREN are so impressed with their knockout coach that they think he deserves a Pride in Oldham award.

Jason Wallace owns Chadderton Boxing Club, which was opened only three months ago by former world boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard, Lonsdale champion Ensley Bingham and British Middleweight Masters champ Warren Tansey.

The fitness fanatic, who lives in Heywood, runs children’s sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and now has scores of people of all ages, who attend regularly throughout the week.

His nominee, who did not wish to be named, said: “My son is nine years old and he’s been diagnosed with high anxiety and is on the autistic spectrum.

“I know he can be hard work but Jason has been so good to him — he even gave him his mobile number so he can call him if he feels stressed out.

Anxious

“My son has never been to anything like this more than once because he gets really anxious and wants to go home but Jason puts him at ease every time he goes. My son really looks forward to it because Jason makes him feel so comfortable.

“I really appreciate everything he does because a lot of people don’t give him the time of day. He’s such a kind man.”

She went on to explain that her son even signs his own name in the registration book when he turns up for sessions — something he has felt unable to do at other clubs.

Jason said he was surprised but overwhelmed and very grateful to be nominated by the boy’s mum.

“I just make him feel included so that he keeps coming,” he said. “He’s hard work but he’s not hard work for me — he’s a good boy. His face lights up every time he signs in.

“I don’t run the club for things like awards. I do it to keep children off the streets — but I am thrilled to be nominated”
