PUPILS who raised £10,849 for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice through a variety of events, including selling pies , a sponsored walk and balloon race, have been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

North Chadderton School chose the local charity as its cause for the year in June, 2013, and began fundraising efforts in earnest.

The students managed to surpass their target of £10,000 over the course of the year with fundraisers that also included an 8.5km walk around the local community, supermarket bag packing and a Valentine-themed school disco.

The money was used to support garden renovations and create a Walk of Hope at the hospice, a maintenance-free block-paved path on which beds and wheelchairs can be safely wheeled, allowing patients to get out into nature.

Year 10 student and member of the student council Jake Dickinson responded to the nomination on behalf of the school.

He said: “I am very proud to be representing North Chadderton School in the Pride in Oldham Awards.

“We have chosen Dr Kershaw’s hospice because it is a local charity and many pupils at the school, myself included, have had friends and family cared for and looked after by the staff at the hospice.

“We are very pleased that we have been able to contribute to something that will last for many years to come — the Path of Hope”

The pupils were nominated by assistant head teacher Tracey Walker, who said: “This fundraising effort really was a tremendous whole-school achievement.

“The energy and enthusiasm of the students in all year groups, 7-13, has been quite outstanding.

“We are proud to say that our students demonstrated that they fully embrace the ethos of North Chadderton School, not only in words but though their actions throughout the year.”
