Playgroup leader Rachel to the rescue

Date published: 15 July 2014

A mother who opened a much-needed playgroup in Lees has been put forward for a Pride in Oldham award.

Rachel Charter (38) was nominated by the Rev Lindsay Neal, minister of Zion Methodist Church, who occasionally helps out at Gems Baby and Toddler Group.

The minister said: “It has been absolutely lovely. The people in the local area have responded to it really well — they all think it’s brilliant.

“She’s made it a place where you don’t just come in, sit and watch the children play but where we can join in with things.

“She is responsible for the atmosphere where people feel comfortable. I think sometimes playgroups can be a little bit stand-offish if people don’t know one another. Rachel has done a marvellous job at getting people in and making them feel comfortable and doing an all round good job.”

Rachel, originally from Peterborough, moved to Oldham for work 16 years ago. Now, she lives in Springhead with her husband and her two children, aged two and three.

Rachel (38) said: “I’m very surprised and shocked, but pleased and honoured that somebody did this. I didn’t expect it — it’s just something that I do. I just wanted to do something for mums. When I had my children I really appreciated going to the playgroups like this myself, and I wanted something in the local area because there was nothing at the time.

“I thought it would good for the parents to make friendship and contacts with people, and a place to go and have a good time.

“I enjoy chatting with the parents and interacting with the children.”
