Smell of success for young tycoons

ENTREPRENEURIAL students know the sweet smell of success after being nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

Sweet Course Candle, the North Chadderton Young Enterprise Team, helped to put Oldham on the business map after forming their own successful company selling a range of dessert-scented candles.

Their innovative idea, which includes a recipe card for each dessert-themed candle, has wowed local consumers and businesses, with the team winning the Young Enterprise Area final before going on to represent Oldham and Greater Manchester in the North-West final in February.

Amazing

Managing director Chloe Booth (18) said: “It feels amazing to be nominated for the award — it just shows that all the hard work has paid off!

“We came up with the idea by brain-storming as a group. We decided on candles, but realised this market is quite saturated so we put a unique spin on it my creating dessert candles, as both the candle and baking market are increasing in size and we feel it has been really successful.

“I would encourage anyone to pursue enterprise. We are a group of 17 and 18-year-olds and have shown that, with hard work, we have been able to create a unique product and get very far in the young enterprise competition.”

The group was nominated by assistant head teacher Adelle Greenwood and business studies teacher James Mannix, who is also young enterprise link teacher.

They said: “The group has demonstrated a strong desire to grow the business while encouraging other young entrepreneurs to follow their dreams.

“We believe that the students have not only raised the profile of enterprise within North Chadderton, but their business journey is one of which the people of Oldham will be incredibly proud.”

The group also works in the community, with Oldham Athletic to develop the club candle — the Latics Delight — as well as organising business breakfasts and supporting local charities, including working with Mahdlo Youth Zone on its Get a Job initiative.
