Pride in Oldham nominee Dr Hyder Abbas and his team at the Jarvis Medical Practice in Glodwick
DEDICATION to awareness and better health has earned a local doctor a Pride in Oldham award nomination.
Dr Hyder Abbas, principal GP at Jarvis Medical Practice at Glodwick Primary Care Centre, has been nominated particularly for aiming to improve ethnic health through education both foor patients and colleagues.
Susan Grant, a former temporary surgery employee, nominated Dr Abbas for his dedication to health education, citing TV appearances on Asian satellite channels to answer viewers’ questions.
She said: “Dr Abbas is very modest about what he does outside the practice, and this was the first most of us knew about his commitment to health education and care outside the surgery.”
The Care Quality Commission recently inspected the practice and praised elements of “outstanding” work, including reaching out to minority ethnic groups particularly on diet and diabetes issues.
Outside the practice, Dr Abbas has set up a registered charity, the British Ethnic Health Awareness Trust, which works to raise awareness of health issues nationally.
Dr Abbas said: “It makes me happy to know someone has nominated me for a Pride in Oldham award; I’m proud to have my work appreciated. I’ve been a GP in Oldham for the past seven years, working tirelessly to improve the health of my patients within the practice and, as the clinical director of the Oldham Commissioning Group and lead GP for diabetes and endocrinology, for patients throughout Oldham.”
