Enviable stance on safety

A NIGHTCLUB manager who has helped build a successful Pub Watch scheme and other projects to improve the town centre has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

Terry Bruce, manager at the Liquid and Envy night clubs in the town centre for three years is also chairman of the Oldham Pub Watch scheme.

During that time he has championed good standards and safety for pub customers, staff and others visiting the town centre at night.

Joe Curran, an Oldham Council officer working with the licensed trade, nominated Terry. “Before Terry became chairman, the scheme was poorly attended and struggled to address some issues. Terry turned things round. After two years, 95 per cent of all licensed premises had become members.

“Terry also introduced a Home Office scheme called Pub Watch Online, ensuring that all the licensed trade members were signed up to it.

“He visited each one and helped to establish the data-sharing system with Greater Manchester Police and other authorities.

“The scheme has been overwhelmingly successful and the system now shares photographs of offenders, vulnerable young people and others who may be in the town centre. This can also include children missing from home.”

The scheme has now been extended to other areas, and there will be further expansion this year.

Terry (50), originally from Doncaster, said: “I’ve never been nominated for anything before so this is quite a surprise. The work is all about making Oldham safer for everyone - pub and club customers, staff and visitors. We’re moving things forward to make the night-time economy busier and better.

“It’s a pleasure to work with so many dedicated people.”
