A CHAMPION landlord has been put forward for a Pride in Oldham award for his charity events and fundraising.

George Campbell (37), who took over as landlord at The George Tavern around two years ago, has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

Regular customer Alison Broadbent, from Delph, said: "I wanted to nominate him because of everything he does.

"He does so much charitable work in the pub and organises lots of events - he always thinks of something different.

"One Christmas he had people competing over who could eat the most Brussels sprouts.

"When you speak to him he is quite quiet but once he has had a couple of drinks he is the life and soul of the party.

"He is very well liked and gets lots of regulars in the pub.

"He even visits his customers if they are ill or in hospital.

"One of his customers loved the pub so much he asked for his ashes to be kept in a Fosters keg in the pub garden.

"George has just started his next endeavour - a Tooty Booty fundraiser for the George House Trust - and he is trying to find the man with the best bottom."

The Manchester trust provides services to people living with, and affected by, HIV.

Alison praised George for helping flood victims in Cumbria last year and for heading up the main funding stream for Oldham Pride.

George (37) said: "I'm quite shocked but I feel honoured.

"Oldham is a big place so to be singled out makes me speechless.

"There are no secrets with Alison.

"I have always done bits and pieces for charity but I enjoy doing it.

"Although it is a small pub I have a lot of local people coming in on a regular basis.

"Those who come in every day are practically family."
