Oldham Athletic 1 - 2 Shrewsbury Town

Date published: 16 September 2017

Oldham Athletic gave as good as they got in a hard-fought game against table topping Shrewsbury Town at Boundary Park but defensive shortcomings cost them the game.

Oldham started well but once Shrewsbury got into their stride they dictated the play.

Stefan Payne put Shrewsbury ahead after Oldham keeper Jack Ruddy failed to hold a Joe Riley cross. Payne was injured scoring and had to be replaced by Carlton Morris.

With half time approaching, Craig Davies, with his fifth goal of the season, equalised for Oldham with a close range header from Gevaro Nepomuceno cross.

Eoin Doyle had a golden opportunity to score early in the second half when he went round Shrewsbury keeper Dean Henderson, but with the goal gaping, albeit from a tight angle, he hit the post.

Alex Rodman charged down a Peter Clarke clearance and played a cut back to Jon Nolan whose shot found the corner of the net to give Shrewsbury victory with his second half goal, his second goal in two games.

Doyle was sent off in injury time following a second yellow card.
