Athletic’s open training session on the Boundary Park pitch proved a huge success.
Hundreds of fans of all ages populated the North Stand at the ground this morning (Wednesday) and watched as Athletic manager Richie Wellens guided his players and staff through a light training stint and some small-sided games on one half of the pitch.
Boss Wellens said: “We want to try and get the fans involved more, and for me it was great to see all the kids running around, taking penalties against the players, taking them on, and generally just enjoying themselves with smiles on their faces.
“If we can give something back that’s great, because they are going to be our supporters for years and years to come.
“It’s important we try and get that bond going with them from an early age.
“This was a big part of going towards that.
“Hopefully the boys and girls who came along enjoyed it.”
With children off school and Athletic’s early bird season ticket deadline looming, it was a great chance for supporters to go and see what goes on behind the scenes.
The session lasted for approximately 90 minutes, after which the players were happy to sign autographs and pose for pictures.
