Nazon double secures a precious point for Athletic

A vital double strike from Duckens Nazon earned Athletic a potentially precious point at AFC Wimbledon, but relegation worries remain for both sides.

An at-times nervy Sky Bet League One 'six-pointer' saw Wimbledon twice take the lead through Jonathan Meades and Joe Pigott, but Richie Wellens' Athletic, who stay one point and one place above the relegation zone, showed their resilience to level twice through hit-man Nazon.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 10th minute with Meades firing in from 10 yards via the aid of a deflection.

Roared on by another terrific away following, Athletic started the second half brightly and were level within five minutes of the restart.

Nazon fired in at the far post following Tom Hamer's long throw-in.

Wimbledon, who are three points above the drop zone, went back in front in the 68th minute with Pigott tapping the ball into the net from Meades' low cut-back.

Athletic equalised in the 74th minute thanks to Nazon's low finish from the edge of the penalty area following strike partner Eoin Doyle's cross.

Nazon came close to completing a hat-trick and grabbing an important win for Athletic, but his header was deflected wide of the post from Aaron Amadi-Holloway's headed centre as the visitors recorded their fifth consecutive draw.

Athletic host mid-table Southend on Tuesday night.

Three points in that game would more than likely provide some much-needed breathing space ahead of the final two games of the season.

However, Rochdale, Walsall and Wimbledon also play on Tuesday night.
