Tyrer boys make it a family affair

Date published: 17 January 2024

Trialist winger Cian Tyrer's reward of a one-year contract at Oldham RL Club makes it a family affair for the Tyrers, given that Cian's cousin Keiran Tyrer is also under contract at Oldham.

Both are grandsons of goalkicking legend Colin Tyrer, the former Leigh and Wigan full-back, while Keiran's father, Sean (Colin's son) also played for Oldham on the wing 30 years ago.

Cian Tyrer (22) was previously a Rochdale player, for whom he scored 28 tries in 44 games in 2022 and was nominated  for the League One young player of the year award.

Said Oldham coach Sean Long: "Cian came to us seeking a trial spell because he wanted to be part of what we are building at Oldham.

"He has been training with us for nothing,

"He backed himself and its paid off."

Cian and Kieran are expected to be in Oldham's squad for Sunday's Law Cup clash at Rochdale, as is another ex-Hornets youngster, Ben O'Keefe, who starred for Hornets last season, like his father before him, before signing a two-year deal for new-look Oldham.

Hornets have eight former Oldham players on their register so a feisty clash at the Crown Oil Arena on Sunday (3pm kick-off) is in prospect.
