Mumps bridge disappears
As Oldham prepares to see the second half of Mumps bridge disappear this weekend to make way for the Metro, here is a chance to look back at how the engineers tackled phase 1 over August bank holiday weekend in 2010 that brought out the crowds to witness the end of an era.
GMPTE recorded the whole engineering project from high above the bridge as a time-lapse video, so you can see the bridge disappear in 30 seconds!

Couldn't agree more. Blindly carrying on with a scheme that is poutring millions down the drain. £18m for a mile and a half of track to Mumps that will be ripped up in 18 months? Never mind, Howard says we can all go to the airport on Metrolink. Won't take 35 minutes like it does in a car Howard, and can you imagine a family of four spending twice as long on Metrolink, having to swap trams and hump all their luggage around? Absolute folly the whole thing.
Ever wondered why the council is so in favour of the metrolink?
The council got no money from the train fares. The council as part owner of metrolink get some money from metrolink fares.
Cui bono.
Sorry Pro Driver there will be no humping luggage around as it is banned in the Metrolink bylaws along with mobility scooters & bicycles.
It is noteworthy that the 'expert' who pushed all this will not be using the Metrolink!
It is indeed absolute folly especially when petrol proces are so high, and people will be forced into using it. How mych better it would have been to have opened the old Delph Donkey line again or others and plenty of money saved too.
Metrolink will transform the borough and attract business, jobs, retailers and developers to Oldham. I think it's a great project.
Sapere Aude, not one place that has the current metrolink goes to has actually attracted businesses, retailers and developers
this topic is my speciality as i've worked on several project adjacent or inconjuction with the metro and the only thing it will bring is the destruction of union street. the majority of properties along there are not structrally capable of withstanding the vibrations of these trams.
soon they'll need pulling down.
Here we go again with the "No luggage on Metrolink" fairy story. I can't find a "no luggage" prohibition on a Metrolink tram. I can't find it on appropriate web sites.
not to jtms,
flake has pointed it out to you twice on here. that i've seen anyway.
another note to jtms!
stagecoach/metrolink rule 17b) Anything which by reason of its nature could be reasonably expected to cause, or does cause, danger, obstruction, unnecessary inconvenience, or nuisance to any passenger, or damage to property, except with the consent of Stagecoach Metrolink’s authorised officers, agents or a Police Officer.
a medium size suitcase comes under this rule.
so how do you get to the airport now then if you cannot take your suitcase?
next time theres a story on the metro jtms will pop up denying the luggage thing again! its as clear as day there!
nice to see that already before any real work has taken place, the roundabaout at manchester street under the bypass has become a nightmare.
all they have done is reduce some exits to one lane.
this is just going to get worse when the real metrolink work starts.
why on earth they're sending it through there is beyond me.
i thought they employed proffesionals? obviously not!
Well looking at the chao on Ashton new road at the moment, its a farce and another stupid idea of GMPTE.
Trains and track just needed upgrading at half the cost it is now.
I agree this council is set on it cause they will as norm, get back handers, they are not interested in the people of Oldham views, just money to pay their councilors extra while council staff lose jobs.
Again money should be spent on more trains and better integrated bus services with joint ticketing and cheaper fares.

very good! im glad the chronicle has documemted the biggest crime against oldham in years.
perfectly good bridges crossing over a major busy junction to be replaced by a ground level crossing forcing road, tram and foot to clash with each other!
and once this is up and running with the new idiotic and potentially chaotic manchester street tram crossin as well, soon peoples commute will be a nightmare ever single morning and evening.
oldham will need a new bypass to bypass the old bypass!
