New market stalls won't cope with Oldham weather
Date published: 09 November 2009
Market traders are very unhappy with the proposals by Oldham Council to move the location of the current outdoor market stalls to Curzon Street and Albion Street.
The new stalls would be under gazebos. Traders we spoke to expressed concerns about the practicalities of the move.
Two traders that we spoke to expressed concerns about the ability of the gazebos to cope with conditions.
One trader told us: "The gazebos would be fine in summer, but they are not strong enough for Oldham winter weather."
Traders said that Tommyfield used to be a thriving market, but the way it has been managed has caused the deterioration and abundance of empty stalls.
One trader, Addul, told us that the management had recently put up the rents. Abdul said: "They are trying to drive people out. Putting up rents is an easy way of getting rid of people."
Market stall-holders were also concerned about lack of information about the proposed new rents and whether there would be suitable access for loading and emergency services at the new sites.
