All That, the exciting mag for young adults

Date published: 13 January 2012

A new 32-page magazine for young adults in Oldham will be hitting the streets next month.

The free magazine, called All That, will be written by young people, for young people and 8,000 copies of the first issue will be printed.

The magazine provides the perfect opportunity for 11 to 21-year-olds in Oldham to gain media experience through writing or taking photographs and would build up experience when heading into further education or be a part of any CV.

Topics include local news and sport, entertainment, fashion and exam advice from a youth viewpoint to reach the issues at the heart of the community.

Contributions could be anything from 200 words for a page or a short comment for Twitter.

Oldham Evening Chronicle editor, Dave Whaley said: “It is an exciting time in Oldham with the opening of Mahdlo, the new academies and the expanding impact of post-16 education around University Campus Oldham, Oldham Sixth Form College and Oldham College.

“I hope in the future there will be an interaction between the young people reading All That magazine and the Oldham Evening Chronicle.”

Jemma Dippnall, co-ordinator of GCSE media studies at Radclyffe School said: “Young people can have a voice from their perspective and have a positive effect. They are being active rather than passive.

“The students are impressed. There has been lots of and it is an overall positive experience.”

Jorel Bond, Go! Oldham blogger and digital journalism student at University Campus Oldham, said being surrounded by support and enthusiasm from various people has given him the determination to work on other ambitious projects.

“It’s been a pleasure dedicating my time and effort to the community so far, but there’s more to be done.

“Without a shadow of a doubt I will thoroughly enjoy working with the team to produce this wonderful magazine.

“One of the amazing things about All That is that young people will and still can provide content.”

The team behind All That Magazine are Volunteer Project Assistants recruited by Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale for three months.

After that, a new team will take over the running of production.

They are based at the Oldham Evening Chronicle offices and oversee all aspects of production with the aim of helping you contribute to the quarterly magazine.

The idea of a youth magazine was first muted by a group of North Chadderton Sixth Form students on a work-experience programme with Chronicle Community Outreach, the Chronicle’s new social enterprise.

All contributors to the first edition, printed by Trinity Mirror, also go into a draw to win a Kindle.

The team can be contacted via schools@oldham-chronicle.co.uk or on 0161 633 2121 ext 395.
