A SURPRISING haul of mud-clad waste has been uncovered from the depths of Uppermill's canals.

While important lock repairs are underway between Moorgate bridge and Lime Kiln lock, Uppermill Community Association seized the opportunity to remove submerged rubbish.

Three bicycles, two shopping trolleys, a wheelbarrow and fire extinguisher were shifted from the canal as part of December Project Day last Thursday.

Belinda Watson of Uppermill Community Action Network (UCAN) said: "We took advantage of the low water line.

"Our efforts resulted in quite a substantial and surprising haul of items from the canal.

"It's good to know the removal of all these items will help towards safer boat passage through Uppermill."

Members also fished out lock keys, road signs and garden furniture with the support of the Canal & River Trust.

To mark their final project day of 2016, UCAN held a celebratory Christmas lunch of turkey sandwiches, mince pies and cups of warm mulled wine.

Ms Watson added: "UCAN would like to say a huge thank you to Phil Smith of the Canal & Rivers Trust who has supported our Project Days since its inception in Autumn 2015.
