A FAMILY came under siege when rocks were hurled through the front window of their house and their car's front and rear windscreens.

The attack happened at a terraced home on Webster Street, Mossley, in the early hours of Boxing Day.

Former nurse Isabel Furness, 53, who previously lived in Lees, Oldham, for a number of years, was at home with one of her sons, Joe, watching TV when the terrifying attack happened.

She told the Chronicle: "My eldest son was sitting on one settee and I was on the other. It was just before 1am. Then I heard a loud sound, like a shotgun, and Joe shouted 'get away from the window'.

"The glass from the smashed window flew everywhere. Some pieces even ended up in the kitchen sink. And the rock that came through the window was huge. It was much bigger and heavier than a brick. I reckon it was just 10cm from hitting me.

"It would have taken quite a strong man to throw it - and also to have the nerve to throw such a big thing.

Mrs Furness added: "Simultaneously rocks were thrown through the car's windows, both back and front. So I think there must have been more than one person involved.

"Joe ran to the front door and said he saw three people running away."

Mrs Furness said her eldest son works for a shipping firm but is back home for a few days for Christmas. Her younger son, George, 17, is at Ashton Sixth Form College and was out when the attack happened.

Mrs Furness, who worked as a nurse for many years, said: "I don't know why anybody would want to do such a thing. It's awful.

"I don't have a public profile. I'm not involved with anything. I've lived here for many years and we get on with everyone. None of us has had any disputes with anyone.

"Webster Street is a quiet street and most of the neighbours are middle aged. It's a good area."
