Big picnic on a precious green space

A COMMUNITY is rallying round to host a "giant" picnic on green space in Mossley which was formerly earmarked for auction.

Dozens of residents are expected to turn out for Picnic on the Green, based at Greaves Street on Sunday, July 30.

Land at Greaves Street was one of five pieces of land put up for sale by Tameside Council earlier this year.

However, along with Cosgrove Gardens, it was withdrawn from auction following large protests by residents.

Save Our Community Spaces (SOCS) was launched to protect the land, as residents are concerned that the withdrawal may only be a temporary measure.

Now this community event is one of a series that are planned to bring people together as well as highlighting to Tameside Council that the space is "valued" and "much-loved."

Music, face painting, giant bubbles, Morris Dancers, a strolling banjo player and Plastic Band performers are among those expected to be in the line-up for the day.

An open invitation has been sent to attend the event, just above the Orchard.

Gregory Brett said via social media: "Do come, it's a great way to get people together enjoying and protecting this lovely green space, and an opportunity to tell people what we do on the Orchard. We might even drum up a few more volunteers. Oh yes, and it will be fun too."

Greaves Street resident Rachel Downham said: "Everyone is welcome. It's a family event so bring your own picnic and there will be free drinks for the kids and music, giant bubbles, and a workshop.

"Hopefully it will be dry and sunny so people can just enjoy the wonderful view, but we have gazebos in case.

"The idea of the event is to bring people together and to show that this isn't simply under-used wasteland that the council can sell off to developers but a much-loved part of our community."

Revellers are invited to attend the orchard site between 12noon and 4pm.
