Councillor’s funeral

SADDLEWORTH parish councillor Ken Hulme’s funeral will take place on Monday at Oldham Crematorium.
Ken, who was 62, had represented the Delph ward on the parish council since 2003 and was due to become chairman this year.
A service and committal will be held at 2pm for the late councillor, who died on Friday. He leaves wife Hannah and son George.
Family flowers only have been requested. Donations can be made to Medical Aid for Palestine or Diabetes UK.

When people say someone was a "character" it's usually an underhand insult. However, in this case it isn't, Mr Hulme was a character and the council chamber needs more of them.

We really do need more people of the caliber of Ken Hulme, never afraid to confront the thorny issues, to raise their head above the parapet. I was going to end by saying RIP Ken, but I daresay in the great hereafter, he’ll be busy knocking a few heads together, championing the underdog from his ethereal vantage point.
