A vintage weekend in the village

A feast of summer fun mixed with nostalgia is promised when a Saddleworth village launches a series of festivities at the weekend.

Dobcross Village Community (DVC) say plans for a Vintage Weekend on Saturday and Sunday to replace their Yanks celebrations will provide a wonderful opportunity for locals to dress up and get together for some fun.

The weekend begins with an All Our Yesterdays coffee morning with the Elderberries at Holy Trinity Church, from 10.30am to noon on Saturday.

And the DVC is asking villagers to dig out old photographs of Dobcross and the community and bring them to the coffee morning so they can be scanned and put on to a DVD and shown on Sunday.

In the evening revellers can enjoy a Vintage Concert at 7.30pm, which will be a repeat of last year’s successful musical offering with Dobcross Brass Monkeys and vocalist Ian Strachan.

There will be more entertainment with Big Jim’s selection of vintage dance music. Tickets cost £5 from the Dobcross Band and Social Club.

Sunday promises to be real old-fashioned affair with Vintage Fete held at the Band Club, from 1 to 5pm.

Sample a delicious afternoon tea while listening to the Dobcross Silver Band, try your hand at bowling, discover vintage crafts with various stalls and demonstrations, and enjoy the All Our Yesterdays photo show.

Villagers will turn back the clock at a 1940s dance with Katz-Korner and The Singing Soldeer at Dobcross Band Club on Saturday, August 9, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 from the Band Club.

And on Saturday, September 6, the club hosts an Italian Evening with Victor Michael singing light opera, followed by Italian music from Big Jim. Complimentary Italian cocktail and antipasti will be served. Tickets cost £15 and must be booked in advance by ringing Jenny on 07594-276003.
