Never still, but still so much together...

IN FIFTY golden years of marriage, Sidney and June Woodhouse have rarely been still.
And it is that busy lifestyle which the Greenfield couple say has given them five decades of happily married life, which has gone by in a flash.
The couple met at the old Princess Ballroom in King Street, Oldham, enjoying rock and roll and jive, when they were teenagers.
“Sidney spotted me first,” said June. “He was always chasing me. I used to go out with his best friend. He liked a drink, so he asked Sidney to look after me and dance with me so no-one else did.”
It wasn’t long before romance blossomed, and the pair became a couple, but June’s mother was adamant her daughter would celebrate her 21st birthday at home before she was allowed to get married.
“In those days you did as you were told,” laughed June.
The couple courted for four years and tied the knot at St Paul’s Church, Ashton Road.
June was a hairdresser and Sidney a toolmaker. He worked for William Bodden and Sons in Coldhurst Street, Oldham, and later trained in glass processing, which opened up his horizons on the job front.
Sidney was a “Glodwick lad” and June was born in King Street, Oldham. They have two sons, Lee, who used to run Triangles hair salon in Lydgate while June ran the Uppermill branch, and Lee.
