Village social club looks to future

A wide-reaching survey will lay down a blueprint for an historic village club’s future.

More than a third of members at Dobcross Band and Social Club completed a detailed questionnaire arming the club committee with a range of ideas.

The club, which had more than 200 members, want to boost activities at their premises on Platt Lane — promoting it as a strategic resource for villagers and the wider community.

And while the bulk of respondents were against changing the club’s name to appeal to a wider audience, they said they would welcome increased use of the facilities by other groups and better publicity of events. The majority were also in favour of creating a lounge with comfortable seating.

But benefit and cost concerns meant results were inconclusive over creating a quiet room for meetings, changing the snooker table for a pool table and altering the position of the main entrance.

However, after a meeting with members when the survey conclusions were revealed, a committee spokesperson said: “We have some really interesting and vibrant ideas to take the club forward.

“The overriding wish of members is to open our doors and welcome more community groups of every age.

“We aim to be the village hub taking in other groups. We are keen to increase the use of the building by the wider community and would welcome any suggestions how this can be achieved.”

The spokesperson added: “New members are always very welcome, but regardless of membership, anyone is invited to call in and enjoy a drink — and take in some of the finest views in Saddleworth.”
