All signs are good for Sadd Fest 14

SHARP-EYED neighbours alerted a builder and called police when a late-night team carrying ladders arrived at the site of pub conversion.

But the emergency was called off when it was revealed they were members of Saddleworth Round Table on a charity mission.

The team erected a 50ft-long banner on the gable end of the landmark The Star Inn at Scouthead, advertising their spectacular music event, Saddfest 14.

The team, lead by Round Table chairman Matthew Sykes, had almost completed fitting the banner on the scaffolding when the builder and police arrived.

Round Table chiefs had asked the scaffolding company if they could put up the banner but a communication breakdown meant the builder was not informed.

Diggle builder John Barlow (44) is converting the former historic coaching inn into three tasteful houses.

He said: “I got calls from neighbours who said a squad of men had suddenly arrived with ladders.

“I didn’t know what to think but we’ve had thefts of stone from the building so I raced to the scene to see what was happening.

“Once the lads explained what was going on I raised no objection.

“Round Table do fabulous work for local charities and I was pleased to help them promote the event.

“They can put a banner in each corner if they wish.”

Dave MacDougall, Sadd Fest 14 organiser, said: “We got our wires crossed. Once we explained to Mr Barlow and the police what was happening, everything was alright. It is commendable that neighbours keep watch on each other’s property.”

And Mr Barlow has been promised free tickets for the event.
