Smiling Emma an inspiration

Date published: 08 August 2014

INSPIRATIONAL Emma Hall, who was diagnosed with a growth-halting brain tumour three years ago, has refused to let her condition get in the way of her education.

And Emma (15), of Delph, has now been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award by her teacher Heather Byron for maintaining a smile in the face of adversity.

The Saddleworth School pupil’s growth came to a sudden halt when she was 12. Doctors confirmed she had a brain tumour which meant six weeks of agonising therapy.

Emma lost her hair during the course of treatment but she coped well throughout and carried on attending school.

Emma said: “Since I had the treatment, I have to go to hospital every four months for check ups.

Difficult

“It’s only really affected my height. It meant I couldn’t get on the netball team and people think I’m only eight.

“Losing my hair was difficult — it’s grown back now but it’s different from before.

“I’m really happy to be nominated for this award. But it seems like nothing to me because I want to do the best I can and don’t like missing school.”

The tumour is now under control but Emma must undergo regular brain scans to monitor her condition as well as daily injections to help her grow.

Emma has been treated at The Christie Hospital, Manchester, and The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Pastoral support teacher Mrs Bryron, who has worked with Emma for eight years, said: “Since Emma began treatment she has only missed school for medical appointments and has an attendance of 93.3 per cent.

“Emma has taken part in all school activities, has achieved top grades for effort and attainment and would never dream of using her illness as an excuse to miss school.

“She has never once complained, has maintained a positive attitude and always has a smile.

“She has recently been appointed as a prefect for year 11 and takes on her role very efficiently and sets an excellent example to other younger pupils.”
