We won’t taint your Waggon

Landlords of a village pub have defended their planned alterations following complaints to brewery chiefs.

Robinson’s Brewery has revealed an ambitious renovation and upgrade of the Waggon Inn on Uppermill’s High Street.

But locals feared the pub’s snug - affectionately known as the Oval Office because of its unique shape - could be affected in the £500,000 scheme.

One regular wrote to the Stockport-based brewery that the plans would “destroy the much-loved village pub. The seating arrangements in this enclosed small space create a unique atmosphere, fostering a friendly atmosphere between friends and strangers.

“Taking out walls will not only destroy the distinct features of the snug but will also intrude on drinkers’ privacy.”

Another rgular said: “I don’t want to see it change. We are all shocked by the plans affecting the snug.”

Chantelle and Matthew John, who took the pub over last year, say the plans will provide a “warm and relaxing oasis” and create up to 20 new jobs.

They said: “We are not taking the soul out of the pub. It’s 15 years since it had any investment and we are very excited. No plans have been finalised but the scheme will inject some warmth and atmosphere.”

William Robinson, MD of Robinson’s pub division, said they received two letters from the public over the proposals: “We are not about tearing the heart out of the building. But the Waggon was ready for investment and we do have to change. We will ensure the character of the pub is maintained.”
