A SPECTACULAR twist on the global celebrity “ice-bucket challenge” has been dreamed up by a Saddleworth man

John Williamson, a marketing manager from Dobcross, called on the help a helicopter pilot to create an online video of his amazing stunt, which has since become an internet hit.

John (27) of Manchester-based 65twenty, which owns the website “Lad Bible” asked Capt Chris Ruddy, boss of Pennine Helicopters, to empty a giant fire-fighting bucket carrying more than 50 gallons of icy water over the head of a colleague.

The stunt, filmed in a field close to Capt Ruddy’s base in Diggle, shows him piloting the LongRanger helicopter over moors towards the man, who is wearing a safety helmet.

To add insult to injury, one of the volunteer’s friends then stepped up and threw an extra bucket of water over the victim.

Said John: “There have been lots of these ice-bucket challenges over the web, so I thought it would be great to do our own, with a twist. We raised hundreds of pounds for charity.”

Pennine helicopters has the only two fire buckets in the UK capable of tackling moorland blazes from the air: “I’ve never been asked to deliberately bomb someone before with water,” said Capt Ruddy.

Money raised by the American-originated challenge goes to ALS research. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive degenerative disease with effects similar to Motor Neurone Disease.
