Warning as lead thefts increase

THIEVES targeted a vulnerable Grotton pensioner to steal lead from her property — prompting police to warn residents to be on their guard.
The theft took place in the early hours of September 22; lead was stolen from the pensioner’s front porch and garage and an attempt made to take some from the roof.
Insp Karen Taylor of Oldham Neighbourhood Policing Team said around £100,000 of lead had been stolen since January.
The victim’s son, who wished to remain anonymous, said the incident has left his mother feeling shaken.
He said: “The damage they have caused is far more than the value of the lead they have taken. It has robbed her of her confidence and they’ve destroyed her sense of security in her home.”
To report suspicious activity call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555 111.
