MUSICIANS and mates are staging a benefit gig for iconic Oldham rocker Morgan Fletcher.

Morgan, who has starred on the local pub and club circuit for 40 years, was forced to quit singing in May after voice problems.

A cyst on his vocal cords was removed early last month but the future of his singing career is still unknown. Friend and fellow musician Johnny Sax says Morgan (62), is now “silently” recovering at his home in Greenfield, but he has done so much for so many people over the years it’s time to repay the favour.

So on Sunday, Johnny will be among a line-up — including Morgan’s Band, Brendon Decko, Trevor Page, Wayne Bentley, Jake and Paul Brierley — at Tara Leisure, in Grains Road, to raise money for Morgan and his family while he recovers.

Morgan’s wife Adele said: “Morgan is very humbled by what Johnny and his friends are doing, though he feels he’s not worthy because he’s not ill - he’s just lost his livelihood.

“It will be a couple of months before we know whether Morgan will be able to sing again. It’s all he’s known since he was 18 so it’s hard for him to deal with but he knows things could be worse.

“The only thing he’s upset about is he won’t be able to make the concert on Sunday because he can’t really speak!”
