A TEENAGE boy and girl from Mossley have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism activities.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock at the 16 year olds’ arrest on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

The pair were arrested by the North-West Counter Terrorism Unit following information received by officers. Searches were made at addresses in Hanover Street and Spring Mill Drive, Mossley.

Yesterday a police van and Tactical Aid Unit van were parked outside a terrace house in Hanover Street — believed to be where the boy was arrested.

Two officers were stationed outside a three-storey house in Spring Mill Drive, believed to be where the girl was arrested, The front door of the house was boarded up.

The girl has since been released without charge but the boy continues to be questioned.

Police were quick to stress that residents should “not be unduly worried” by the news and that a thorough investigation would follow.

Chief Superintendent Caroline Ball said: “This investigation is in no way linked to any sort of international terrorist plot nor have we recovered any evidence to suggest the community of Mossley is at risk.

Julie Clays, a Mossley resident for more than 20 years, said: “I’m stunned. Mossley is a wonderful place to live and people get along here. I’m really shocked.

Neighbours in Spring Mill Drive said a couple live at the girl’s address: “They are just a normal family, very nice and pleasant. The girl seems normal enough as well. I see her all the time walking to school.”
